These are all running miles this week, which is both a good and a bad thing. As I’m increasing for marathon training, it’s good my mileage is getting higher. I’m shoving marathon training into a few weeks’ time, but I’m getting in most of the long runs I need (I wish I had an extra weekend or two in between Rev3 and Jacksonville Bank, but I don’t). Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m not trying to run a blowout marathon, so I’m not going to panic that I haven’t been in a traditional marathon training cycle. I’ll get in a 20 miler and a 22 miler in the next two weekends before tapering.
The bad thing about this is that there isn’t any biking or swimming mileage. The only reason I don’t feel guilty about this is because I was out of town visiting family from Tuesday to Sunday, so I’m just pleased I got in every mile of my running. Otherwise, I’d feel more frustrated with myself.
This week’s runs were indeed a happy face, as the DailyMile face reflects. Aside from a less than outstanding long run, all of my runs went swimmingly.
Tuesday: Unplanned rest. Got up early to pack, flew to Atlanta right after work, and didn’t get to my parents’ house until 9 PM. I was fit to be tied, so I just pushed everything back a day since Friday was just for swimming.
Wednesday: 4 uneventful treadmill miles. My sister sat and chatted with me while I ran at 9:30 pace. I ran a lot on the treadmill at my parents’ house because they live on a mountain and it was below 25* the whole time I was there. A hilly, icy run just wasn’t tempting to me.
Thursday: 6 miles tempo on treadmill at an incline. I warmed up a mile, ran 4 at 8:35 pace, then cooled down a mile. It was a successful run, and the tempo felt good.
Friday: Easy run. With the tempo the day before and the 18 miler the day after, this probably wasn’t even as easy as it should have been, though I ran 4 miles at 10:00/mile pace on treadmill at an incline.
Saturday: I had an 18 mile long run scheduled. I planned to meet up with a friend from high school, though she was only good for 13 miles since she hasn’t been marathon training. I debated going and running downtown alone before meeting her, but between people telling me the “areas to avoid” and not knowing the area well, I opted to do 5 on the treadmill before going to meet her. It wasn’t ideal, but in reality I’m going to go ahead and say my safety and getting in the miles was more important than getting them done outside.
Then we met up and ran the remaining 13. I did part of the Ironman Chattanooga run course, and I just have to say that I’m going to have to do some serious hill training before next September. The picture below shows the bottom part of a medium grade but pretty long hill (that continues up past a curve) we will have to do twice.
The run hurt a lot, because I’m not used to hills. After spending a bunch of it on hills, we ran to a flatter area with ant hills in comparison and ran there for a few miles. There was a ten mile portion of the run with 700 feet of elevation gain, which is a lot for me. It was also a lot more rolling hills than running bridges here in Clearwater. With those it’s up at a higher grade, but then down and flat for a few miles before hitting another bridge.

I couldn’t have pushed through that run without my friend Bekah. She’s a faster runner who lived at altitude for a while, so the 9:45 pace we averaged was much easier for her than it was for me. She kept telling stories and having conversation that I could fill in with short phrases and comments, and it kept me going. I wanted to throw in the towel at 16, but I knew I’d be mad at myself later. I didn’t tell her I wanted to go straight to the cars and just pushed through on the last turn away from the cars to add in the last two miles. I’m of course now glad that I did, but when I finished that run I just sat down. I physically couldn’t keep standing. I think between Thanksgiving foods making me a little nauseous, the extreme cold that I’m not used to, the hills, and the increased miles, my body wasn’t happy. I iced, took Aleve, drank chocolate milk, wore compression, and rested for the rest of the day. I think I did a good job recovering, because I wasn’t sore Sunday like I was expecting to be.
Sunday: 4 mile recovery run felt magical. I kept having to hold myself back. I averaged 9:27 on those miles, and that was in an effort to slow down. The whole run was just perfect. I thought at one point that I might should just keep going in case I didn’t have another great run like that for a while.
I hope you had great weeks. My goals for this week include a 20 mile long run, getting on the bike at least twice, and finding out about my pool options for the winter.
